About
Born and raised in Amsterdam to an English mother with Polish/Jewish roots and a Scottish father, my foundation is one of straddling cultural boundaries. Having grown up between cultures makes me feel as if I belong everywhere, or nowhere, depending on my frame of mind. It also shows me that the most fascinating stories often emerge from the spaces in between - where traditions overlap and identities merge.
Driven by an insatiable curiosity and an intrinsic desire to understand the world firsthand, I studied Audio Visual Media at the Utrecht School of Arts, specialising in Documentary Film. Since graduating with a BA (hons) in 2013, my work as a filmmaker has taken me to unexpected places.
I've discussed the merits of picking tea during full moon with tea pickers in the Himalayas, explored the ethics of whale hunting with Inuit elders in the Arctic, examined the psychological impact of raising a child with Down syndrome with a captain of industry in Taiwan, and heard firsthand accounts of gang violence in Cape Town's townships. The more we transgress our own cultural and economic bubbles, the more profoundly we understand a simple truth, beneath our surface differences - we all want to create, nurture, belong and love.
Much of my early creative career was spent in service of others - not by design or intention but, in hindsight, from an avoidance of addressing deep questions of identity and agency. The courage to show oneself authentically can be a casual act for one person and a life's journey for another. From youthful but somewhat unconscious enthusiasm, I now see filmmaking as both a catalyst for transmutation and a bridge to meaningful connection with others. Heading solidly towards mid-life, it truly feels like I’m just getting started!
